How to watch The Batman in South Africa a day early

The Batman officially launches in theatres only on 4th March, but South Africans can catch it a day early.

Ster-Kinekor has opened bookings to watch The Batman on 3rd March with one big caveat: these early screenings are only for the more expensive IMAX theatres.

In exchange early viewers will also receive a “free” comic. We say free as it’s baked into the cost of attending, but that’s a story for another day.

The Ster-Kinekor adverts don’t reveal what this comic is but similar overseas events state that it’s the famous Batman: The Long Halloween #1 with an alternate cover. Click here to see what that alternate art cover looks like, which has also been used in the banner image on the Ster-Kinekor site (see below).

Bookings for this early screening of the movie can be made here but, because not every theatre is IMAX, viewers are limited to which venue they can attend.

At the time of writing the following Ster-Kinekor theatres are open for the early IMAX screenings of The Batman –

  • Eastern Cape: Baywest
  • Gauteng: Cradlestone, East Gate, Mall of Africa and The Grove
  • KwaZulu-Natal: Gateway
  • Western Cape: Blue Route and Capegate

The screenings all seem to be taking place at 19:45. 2D IMAX seats cost R168 each and no 3D IMAX is available.

Something interesting we found, but not related to this early IMAX screening, is that Eastgate (Gauteng), Somerset (Western Cape) and Ilanga (Mpumalanga) are offering 2D screenings of the movie featuring subtitles from 4th February.

If you’ve become used to actually understanding what characters are saying in movies thanks to subtitles this is a godsend and if we miss the early screening we will definitely be going this route.

“When the Riddler, a sadistic serial killer, begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, Batman is forced to investigate the city’s hidden corruption and question his family’s involvement,” reads the official description for the movie.
