Report suggests M2 chip and four new Macs on the cards from Apple this year

When it comes to the most exciting hardware out of Apple, its in-house silicon and newly imbued MacBooks appear to be grabbing all the headlines. While the price tags of the M1 Pro and M1 Max are out of the reach of most, the prospect of an M2 chip might prove more worthwhile.

As for when we would see such a chipset, reports from Bloomberg suggest Apple could be readying to reveal an M2 chip alongside four new iterations of Mac device laster this year.

The report comes via Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, which is a fairly reputable source on such rumours and murmurings.

According to Gurman, the new M2 chip will be faster than its predecessor, although that isn’t a necessarily brave prediction. He does, however, note that the chipsets will feature than the eight core architecture as the M1 chips. The big improvement though, would come on the graphics side, with a nine or 10 core design being touted by the insider.

Gurman also says that the aforementioned four Mac devices could include a new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac Mini and iMac. While the prospect of any new Mac hardware would whet the appetite, a MacBook Air powered with a new M2 chip could prove quite tempting.

Much of that, however, would hinge on pricing, which Apple is yet to make as democratic as many would hope.

Along with silicon for later this year, Gurman forecasted to 2023 as well, noting that Pro and Max versions of the M2 were on the cards, along with an M3 chipset. Given the current state of the component market globally, it remains to be seen if Apple can indeed keep its rollouts to such a tight schedule.

Either way, there is a lot to look forward to from the Cupertino-based company, at least in terms of its foundry.
