Sonic third movie and series announced following the sequel

Later this year Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is releasing, but Sega and Paramount already have their eyes set beyond that as the pair announce a third movie in the works as well as a live action series.

Very few details are provided about these projects other than the fact that the series will be on the Paramount+ streaming service and will see the return of Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles.

Elba is voicing the red echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as revealed back in August last year. Spinoff TV shows following movies are nothing new, but big name voice actors returning isn’t so common with their talents usually replaced by a cheaper cast member who can do a decent impression.

As for the third movie the press release we received barely mentions it aside from stating that it’s now in development. The press release does, however, state that the first movie earned almost $320 million globally.

“We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed. We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them,” says CEO of Sega Corporation, Haruki Satomi.

“2022 is shaping up to be a significant year for the franchise with the second film being released this April, as well as Sonic Frontiers, the highly anticipated video game title, coming this holiday. Sonic has been beloved by fans across the world for over 30 years and we look forward to continuing to bring memorable moments and experiences to them for many years to come,” the CEO continues.

As we wait for more news about the show and the third movie, the second movie is right around the corner with an 8th April release date.
