Avo by Nedbank now totals more than one million customers and 20 000 merchants

The super app from Nedbank, Avo, has surpassed a significant milestone, having garnered more than one million customers.

The ecommerce-focused offering has seen a particular surge of late, with Nedbank confirming that Avo has doubled its customer base over the past four months and a staggering 50 percent of this being over the past four weeks.

Like the uptake of several digital services over the past two years, Avo’s recent success can be put down to the pandemic and the need for customers to still be able to access services, which this super app affords.

“Avo growth has accelerated sharply since its launch in June 2020 mid-pandemic and continues to serve our ever-expanding customer base – demonstrating to all South Africans why this app is a real e-commerce contender and a champion of the platform revolution,” notes Ciko Thomas, managing executive for Retail and Business Banking at the Nedbank Group.

“Being first to mind has always been the ambition of Avo, and with the coalescence of so many exciting offerings coming together, Avo is clearly a contender in the spotlight of the South African digital growth narrative,” he adds.

Contributing to the recent surge has been the rolling out of new key services, such as an Auto Marketplace and business-to-business platform that has signed up more than 20 000 merchants to date.

“Registered businesses receive all the benefits of growing their e-commerce expansion through Avo, including bank grade security, payment reservation, end-to-end logistics support and access to an ever-growing 1 million+ customer base,” unpacks Nedbank in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“We have continued our focus on listening to our customers and stakeholders, to ensure we enable and then offer the best customer experiences. Avo is a key component of Nedbank’s wider ecosystem participation and we remain focused on scaling the platform,” adds Fred Swanepoel, CIO of the Nedbank Group Ltd.

As the pandemic continues and appetites for digital services from both consumers and businesses alike shows no signs of dying down, super apps like Avo will prove crucial for Nedbank moving forward.
