Déjà vu: LEGO is making another DeLorean, well 3 of them actually

LEGO has announced that it’s taking another shot at a buildable DeLorean as a new set is announced that allow you to build three different version of the vehicle based on the Back to the Future movies.

Set 10300: Back to the Future Time Machine has 1 856 pieces and will launch on 1st April for US$169.99 | AU$269.99 | CA$219.99 | €169.99 | £149.99 depending on the region.

South African availability and pricing has not been revealed yet but it is likely that it will also arrive on 1st April or just after that.

Local pricing is usually closer to the Euro and right now €169.99 translates to around R2 810. Those who would like to pick one up should probably put aside R3 000 just to be safe.

For your money you’re getting a set that, when assembled, measures in at 35 X 19 X 12 centimetres (depth X width X height) and comes with two minifigures and some accessories.

Those minifigures are, of course, Marty McFly and Doc Brown. The accessories include the famous pink hoverboard, a different licence plate and even some trash which is used as fuel.

Click on the images to enlarge them and see all the great details of the set:

This isn’t just a plastic building kit that makes one static set as there are two bonus features. The first of these is a light brick – an official LEGO piece that you can press to emit light from an LED. This is positioned behind the Flux Capacitor to give it a glow.

The other great trick here is that this is a three in one set, though you can only build and display one version at a time with what’s included in the box. Buyers can choose between the regular DeLorean, the flying version with folded wings, and the final version which is given a boost by the train.

You can see some product images of the set on this page above and, on the official LEGO website, there’s a short trailer to show it off in a fun adventure through time.

That trailer is a tad misleading because it makes the DeLorean much smaller than it actually is. This set isn’t scaled to minifigures, because LEGO already made that product.

Hop in your time machine and head back to 2013 when LEGO released set 21103, a much smaller DeLorean as part of the Ideas platform which allows fan creations to become retail products.

That set is rather infamous for not looking much like the DeLorean at all, something attributed to how new the Ideas programme was and the small scale making it difficult to capture a lot of detail at the scale.

In the almost decade since the release of that set many people were hoping for a new DeLorean that would either use newer, smaller pieces to make a better build at minifig scale, or go much bigger and this new set did the latter.

LEGO’s ill-fated 2013 attempt at making a DeLorean.
