Primitive Technology returns after a two year+ hiatus

On YouTube there is an entire genre of videos where people go out into the wild and build structures and items with their bare hands. We’re not sure who exactly started the trend or why it’s so captivating, but one of the biggest names in this space is Primitive Technology.

The channel has been dormant for more than two years with its last video uploaded all the way back on 13th December 2019. Thankfully, however, it’s now back.

The latest video focuses on a thatched roof workshop area and, true to the form of all the other videos, there’s little else in it aside from the actual work of building the structure.

Those who turn on the subtitles can learn additional information about what is happening on screen and the video description explains a bit more.

“I built a thatched workshop as an area to do future projects in out of the rain and weather. The structure was a 4 x 4 m square covered with a gabled thatched roof where the lowest point was 2 m above the ground and the highest point was 4 m. This is the largest hut I’ve built to date taking 5 weeks to build. The structure sheds rain quite well and being open and without walls allows smoke to exit without issue,” the description reads.

While it’s a good video like the rest this one is less about what’s made and more the fact that the channel and its operator are still alive.

The person running the channel is John Plant, an enigmatic figure whose name we likely only know because he’s credited as the author of the Primitive Technology book and listed as the creator of the channel in promotions for it.

If all of this seems a bit weird and you’re wondering why we’re so happy to see a channel about building things out of wood and rocks come back, it may be an insular YouTube thing that you can only really get into if you spend way too much time on the platform.

It boils down to being happy that some content you like is back after a long time, especially since the pandemic happened right after the Primitive Technology hiatus started.
