SASSETA bursaries for unemployed youth opens applications

The Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASSETA) has opened up bursary applications intended for youth in South Africa that is currently unemployed.

Until 14th April students can apply if they meet certain criteria which includes the age range of 18 to 35, registration at a South African university of TVET college, a combined household income of under R600 000 and a few other stipulations.

One of these stipulations is, of course, that the student must be unemployed.

“SASSETA shall pay a maximum R80 000 per learner (full-time), per year for approved programmes. The student may be covered for the full duration of the approved programme, if they pass at least 60% of their modules including their major subject. This fee includes tuition (university fees), textbooks, on campus accommodation or university approved accommodation and meals,” a description of the programme reads.

“Part-time studies / distance learning will be funded at a maximum of R35 000 per student, per year for approved programmes. The student may be covered for the full duration of the approved programme, if they pass at least 60% of their modules including their major subject. This fee includes tuition and textbooks only.”

According to the information page on the SASSETA website more than two hundred grants will be given out broken by the following fields of study:

  • LLB – 50 grants
  • Paralegal Studies – 20 grants
  • Security Management – 20 grants
  • Clinical Social Work – 10 grants
  • Nursing – 10 grants
  • Pharmacy – 10 grants
  • Psychology – 10 grants
  • IT Related Programmes – 10 grants
  • Any Occupation listed in the National List of Occupations in High Demand 2020 – 90 grants
