Valve makes big changes to the Steam Deck in just a few days

Valve continues to impress us with its handling of the recently-launched Steam Deck as the company issues an update that addresses and fixes many aspects of the handheld.

These improvements were made rather fast with the announcement stating that they happened over the course of just three days.

These changes include:

  • “Fixed thumbstick deadzone regression from a recent firmware update
  • New app launching animation and layout
  • UI updates for Aperture Desk Job
  • Updates to claiming Deck Rewards (accessed from the Notifications panel in quick access menu)
  • Store event style updates
  • Library style updates
  • Search style updates
  • Localization updates
  • Configurator updates
  • Stability improvements to system updater
  • Improvements to focus / navigation
  • Improvements to out of box experience
  • Improvements to Store navigation on Deck
  • Improvements to shutdown flow
  • Controller: make sure the personalization file is updated in memory and event sent to UI when it changes on disk
  • Controller: fixed bug when adding action set layer to config without any action sets yet.
  • Fixed bug with cloud saves
  • Fixed duplicate entry bug in friends UI
  • Fixed missing trading cards in the activity feed
  • Crash fix for keyboard.”

Those who have been following the release of the Steam Deck, or are lucky enough to already own one, will know that many of these fixes are in direct response to user feedback.

One big creator who voiced their problems with the Steam Deck was LinusTechTips who called the Steam Deck “unfinished” in a video review (embedded at the bottom of this page).

Many of the criticisms were aimed at UI and usability issues which, as you can see from the list of changes, Valve has sought to fix.

As we wait for the Steam Deck to come to South Africa and many other countries, it’s very promising to know that Valve is on the ball when it comes to keeping the platform updated and responding to the community.
