Interested in UCT? Tune into the Virtual Open Day tomorrow

Students who have an interest in studying at the University of Cape Town (UCT) should make time on their Saturday tomorrow to tune into the Virtual Open Day.

Taking place between 10:00 and 15:00 tomorrow, the Virtual Open Day is much like a regular open day that universities host, albeit online.

“The annual UCT Open Day is aimed at high school learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12, their families and teachers. Due to restrictions necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was hosted virtually in 2021. The risks considered last year remain present, and therefore we will host the 2022 UCT Virtual Open Day on Saturday 9 April 2022 on the Microsoft Teams Live platform,” the dedicated page for the event reads.

There’s not one link to the Microsoft Teams livestream, but several depending on what part of the open day you want to tune into.

We recommend that those interested read over this programme – available here as a PDF – which includes the times for the various sections, the topics for those sections, speaker and the all important links.

Reading through that programme and there’s a lot packed into the five hours. By our count there are 47 different sections which will make up the open day.

Of note here is the one taking place between 13:50 and 14:20, which is marked as discussing the National Benchmark Tests (NBT). It seems that, over the past few years, the NBTs have become less important with Wits ignoring them for its 2021 intake.

On the UCT website the NBT is still mentioned as a way of judging admissions and it proudly boasts that things have been this way for 30 years, so we’d be very surprised if that changes.

It’s little details like this which make attending open days vitally important for students and their parents.

“This event presents an ideal opportunity to explore the vast range of undergraduate study options that UCT offers. The opportunity to get information about the different academic programmes and what they involve is absolutely vital to making the best study choices,” the university adds.
