South Africans can buy a year of Disney+ for a reduced R950

To celebrate the upcoming launch of Disney+ in South Africa, the service is offering local viewers a discount when they buy a year’s subscription upfront.

The regular localised price for Disney+ is R119 per month and R1 190 for a year. The streaming service has been announced to launch in the country on 18th May, and you can see our comparison of the then newly-announced pricing here.

The introductory special of R950 for a year is, then, a R240 discount off of the regular price. That’s a pretty decent saving as the difference can buy several months of subscriptions on its own, and this is combined with the usual discount you get for buying a year.

A press release we received from Disney South Africa provides us with the following steps you can take to get this deal:

  • “Customers should visit www.disneyplus.com to register their interest, where they can also find the full terms and conditions
  • From launch day (18 May), those who registered their interest will receive an exclusive offer link
  • This introductory offer will only be available to those who pre-register their interest before midnight on 17 May 2022, ahead of launch day.”

This 18th May launch day will mean that South Africans will finally have official, legal access to all the big Marvel and Star Wars shows released so far, including the latest series from the latter.

“Subscribers will have access to Star Wars’ ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ and ‘The Mandalorian’ from executive producer and writer Jon Favreau and, from 27 May, the highly anticipated ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’. In addition, the Marvel Studios’ series ‘Moon Knight’ starring Oscar Isaac as Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life and Academy Award-nominated ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings’ starring Simu Liu and Awkwafina will both be available at launch,” the announcement continues.

The last episode of Moon Knight releases on 4th May so this is another Marvel series that we will only be able to watch retroactively in this country. Thankfully it will be just in time for Obi-Wan Kenobi.

“Users will have access to features like high-quality viewing, up to four concurrent streams, 4k video quality for select titles and the ability to set up to seven different profiles, including the ability for parents to set Kids Profiles to access age-appropriate content,” the press release adds.
