UP holding poetry event for World Book Day

The University of Pretoria (UP) is hosting an event focused on poetry for World Book Day.

World Book Day takes place on 23rd April in South Africa and, according to this post by the SA government, is a “symbolic date in world literature… a world-wide tribute to books and authors”.

According to UNESCO the day is also known as World Book and Copyright Day which praises books for its history of disseminating knowledge. The date, 23rd April, was chosen as it was the day in 1616 when William Shakespeare, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Miguel de Cervante all died.

On the part of UP, the focus will be on poetry with attendees encouraged to participate.

All are welcome. You will have an opportunity to bring along your poem to either share out loud with the audience (and which might be shared on social media), add your poem to our collection, or you can simply come along to hear poetry and enjoy the moment together,” the announcement reads.

“If you cannot be there at 13h00, you are welcome to come to the Book Nook beforehand and write your poems on our Whiteboard to share them with other poetry lovers!”

The quick and important details for the even can be found below and those attending should remember to RSVP using the registration link.
