Blizzard hires its first Head of Culture

As the lawsuits pile up at Activision Blizzard, Blizzard has announced the appointment of its first Head of Culture.

An ambiguous title to be sure, Head of Culture is responsible for “growing and implementing our culture strategy, ensuring alignment across all teams and function and revamping learning and talent development programs”. This position will be supported by the Blizzard leadership team.

The person who will be taking this position is Jessica Martinez who previously worked at the Walt Disney Company for 14 years. During her time at the House of Mouse, Martinez served as Chief of Staff, Chief Security Officer and Chief Technology and Digital Officer for Disney Parks and Resorts. At Disney, Martinez also reportedly helped create a values-driven culture which is good to note.

Martinez has her work cut out for her as the pictures painted by various lawsuits and allegations paints Blizzard as a toxic employer that protects high ranking officials rather than having the interests of all employees front of mind.

In a press statement, Blizzard said that Martinez would be “spearheading vital action plans to ensure our values are reflected in our day-to-day operations and organizational design”. That last point about organisational design is incredibly important and we hope that Blizzard shares more with the public as these action plans come to fruition.

“When you create a people-first environment where teams feel safe, valued, and work together toward a shared purpose, everyone thrives–the employees, the players, and the business,” added Martinez.

We wish Martinez luck in her new position and hope that she can help bring about real and substantial change at Blizzard.
