COVID-19 hit phone industry could see Samsung ship 30 million less devices

Over the past couple of years we have seen the pandemic impact supply chains in a number of industries. While it impacted the mobile sector in particular, Samsung has been able to set record quarters, but that may end in 2022.

This as a new report from South Korean outlet, Maeil Business News, suggest Samsung has had to drastically reduce its prediction productions for the remainder of the year as a result of resurgent waves of COVID-19 infection in that part of the globe.

In turn, manufacturing has taken a blow and now Samsung has reportedly noted that it will ship 30 million less devices that initially projected for the rest of the year.

As TechCrunch points out, the ongoing Russian invasion of the Ukraine has also had an impact, with several companies including Samsung choosing not to sell devices in Russia.

That said it is important to point out that Samsung is yet to officially comment on the recent reports.

Regardless, the South Korean tech giant is not the only mobile player to be affected by a recent COVID-19 resurgence, with Apple too having to temper plans to expand production for 2022, so much so that the next iteration of iPhone may be delayed as well.

While Samsung’s size and scope will likely help it cushion any predicted dip in shipments or sales in the coming quarters, of more immediate interest is how this will impact the company’s mobile strategy.

This especially for its burgeoning mid-range Galaxy A phones and continued push into the foldables space.

Either way if the two biggest mobile vendors are bracing themselves for a lacklustre 2022, it is likely that other manufacturers are preparing to do the same.
