COVID-19 in South Africa: 10th May 2022

The current rise in newly recorded cases for COVID-19 in South Africa has proved difficult to track.

This as each passing day has seen the number of infections rise and fall with no apparent trend. As such, it has proved difficult to determine whether the country is indeed on the cusp of a fifth wave of infections.

That said, there has been an uptick in recent weeks, which means greater caution while outside the confine of our homes is needed, as is ensuring the population is fully vaccinated.

For now the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) regarding the spread of the virus shows 3 237 new cases being recorded in the past 24 hours. This sees the total number of infections to date rise to 3 844 625.

The department also notes that 10 fatalities have been recorded too, with the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa now sitting at 100 533.

As for other key figures, the recovery rate has slipped to 95.7 percent, while more than 24.67 million tests have been conducted to date.

Shifting to the vaccine rollout, 49 285 jabs have been administered in the past 24 hours, as turnout to sites sticks to a steady pace. As of 17:00 on 9th May 2022, a total of 35 128 056 vaccines have been administered across SA.
