COVID-19 in South Africa: 17th May 2022

The number of newly recorded cases for COVID-19 in South Africa continues to see-saw.

This as the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) shows that 2 952 new infections have been recorded over the past 24 hours, which is far less than we have seen in recent weeks.

As a result, it has become increasingly difficult to determine whether the country is indeed on the precipice of a fifth wave of infections.

That said, the recent rise in cases still warrants a need to strengthen our vaccination efforts.

For now, the total number of infections recorded to date now sits at 3 894 745. The department also notes that 16 fatalities have been reported too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa rises to 100 771.

Other key figures in the report show the recovery rate slipping to 95.4 percent as 3 713 797 recoveries have been reported so far, while more than 24.90 million tests have been conducted to date.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 49 028 jabs administered, with 19 115 of these being booster shots. As of 17:00 on 16th May 2022, a total of 35 494 610 vaccines have been administered across SA.
