The past week and weekend has proved frustrating for many in the country as a result of continued loadshedding and a power alert issued by Eskom last night confirms that it will be implemented once again this week. As such, it puts a strain on efforts to fight the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa.
Looking at the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH), figures regarding the spread of the virus look relatively low compared to what we have seen in previous days.
That said, it is from a Sunday, so we will need to see how numbers progress as the week does.
For now, the past 24 hours has seen 3 220 new cases reported, as the total number of infections rises to 3 929 872. The department also notes that two fatalities have been recorded too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa now sits at 100 933.
Looking at the other key figures in the report, the recovery rate has picked up slightly to 95.9 percent, while more than 25.06 million tests have been conducted to date.
As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has only seen 2 804 jabs administered owing to it being a Sunday, not to mention the recent drop in temperature. As of 17:00 on 22nd May 2022, a total of 35 744 528 vaccines have been administered across SA.
