COVID-19 in South Africa: 26th May 2022

As the week has progressed, the number of newly recorded infections for COVID-19 in South Africa has picked up. While we have not seen a significant surge, it looks like we are still struggling to shake off the recent rise in cases.

To that end, the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 5 284 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours. Consequently the total number of infections recorded to date now sits at 3 941 045.

The department also notes that 41 fatalities have been recorded over the past 24 hours too, with the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa rising to 101 043.

Looking at other key figures in the latest report, the NDoH notes that the recovery rate remains unmoved at 96.0 percent as 3 784 925 recoveries have been reported so far. Added to this is more than 25.13 million tests having been conducted to date.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 49 229 jabs administered, with 18 832 of these being booster shots. As of 17:00 on 25th May 2022, a total of 35 901 813 vaccines have been administered across the country.
