COVID-19 in South Africa: 9th May 2022

In recent weeks the statistics regarding the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa has steadily been increasing. While we have not seen significant surges normally associated with a fully fledged wave of infections, the rise in daily figures is concerning.

As such, the coming weeks will prove critical in terms of government’s response should a fifth wave of infections happen.

For now, the numbers remain relatively high. This as the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 5 486 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours.

The total number of infections recorded to date has climbed to 3 841 388 as a result.

The department also notes that seven fatalities have been recorded too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa now sits at 100 523.

As for other key figures in the report, the recovery rate has dropped to 95.8 percent, along with more than 24.67 million tests having been conducted to date.

Shifting to the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 2 352 jabs administered, owing to it being a Sunday. As of 17:00 on 8th May 2022, a total of 35 128 412 vaccines have been administered across SA.
