Latest WhatsApp update adds emoji reactions, 2GB file sizes and group limit of 512

WhatsApp this week announced a sizeable update to its messaging platform, with the headline grabbing addition being Facebook-style emoji reactions being added to the mix.

While that brings functionality across the different Meta-owned platforms closer together, we are a bit more interested in the other elements that are also a part of the update.

This as file size limits have been increases massively from the previous limit of 100MB to 2GB.

The jump in file size is protected by end-to-end encryption WhatsApp confirms, with the platform also advising users to share such large files when connected to WiFi. There will also be an on-screen display indicating how long an upload/download will take.

The other addition in this update is also limit related, with up to 512 users now capable of joining a group, doubling the previous cap of 256 people.

WhatsApp says this has been one of its most requested features when it comes to chats, but given how frantic large groups can already get on the platform, having 512 people trying to get a word in on one chat seems a little frightening.

As for when you’ll be able to access the new features, WhatsApp confirmed to The Verge that emoji reactions and file size limits should be readily accessible now, but noted that the larger group limit is being rolled out slowly across different ecosystems and regions.
