Netflix reportedly exploring livestreaming on the platform

Over the weekend a report from Deadline pointed to Netflix actively exploring the addition of livestreaming to the platform.

As we know, the past financial quarter has been less than satisfactory for investors, along with increased pressure from competitors like Disney+ and HBO Max, which means Netflix does need to look for ways to reinvigorate interest in the streaming platform.

While Netflix is said not be going down the Twitch or YouTube route, sources say the platform is looking at ways to add live content to the mix, along with features that could prompt greater real-time interaction from subscribers.

We have seen the Netflix explore different features like this in the past, with the choose your own adventure style of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch being the most notable.

As for how the live streaming would work, a good example noted by Deadline would be the recent Netflix Is A Joke comedy festival, which saw more than 300 comedians on stage performing. From that event, 12 stand-up specials are expected to follow on the platform as a result of a live recording, whereas live streaming would offer subscribers access to almost 300 stand-up shows.

Another example is a reality show like The Circle, which could integrate Big Brother-esque live voting in order for greater engagement from subscribers. There is also the ability to do live reunion shows for series like Too Hot To Handle or Love Is Blind, not to mention the opportunity for sit downs with talent from series with cult following like Ozark or Squid Game.

While live streaming brings with it many logistical headaches and technical challenges, adding it to the mix might prove a master stroke for Netflix, which is in dire need of something fresh to compete with the original content of the aforementioned streaming competitors.

Unfortunately no timeline has been mentioned for livestreaming on Netflix, with the company likely exploring other options such as a cheaper ad-filled tier first.
