Snapchat to introduce parental control hub called Family Center soon

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal in October of last year, Snap Inc. CEO Evan Spiegel said more parental controls were coming to Snapchat, but no timeframe was mentioned back then.

That changes now, however, with TechCrunch reporting that a new feature called Family Center (excuse the US spelling) is set to be rolled out on Snapchat soon.

Family Center will give parents greater visibility on what their children are going on the app, with the ability to see who they are friends with, as well as who they are messaging on the platform.

As TechCrunch notes, Snapchat has been a little lax in terms of adding greater parental controls to the mix, so the addition of Family Center will likely be welcome. Younger users, and teenagers in particular, make up a sizeable portion of Snapchat’s audience, with 75 percent aged between 13 and 34 years in 20 different countries.

According to screenshots sotted by TechCrunch, while these new features add far more control to parents, there are limits. This as they are able to see who their child has been speaking to, but only for the past seven days, as well as not seeing the contents of said conversations, which would of course bring up other issues as regards privacy and consent.

Along with the aforementioned features, Family Center will also help parents report abuse or harassment on the platform if needed, although it is not explained what will happen to users who are reported on.

Unfortunately no launch date has been mentioned following the discovery of these screenshots, with Snap Inc. choosing not to comment on the matter at the time of writing.
