UJ students pointed to Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships

Students at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) who are thinking about obtaining a Master’s degree have been encouraged to apply to the Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships (QECS) for study in 2023.

The QECS provides full tuition, a stipend for living expenses. a return economy flight to the host country for study and an “arrival allowance”. It also includes a research support grant although this needs to be requested and it goes through its own approval process.

“QECS offers a unique opportunity to study a two-year Master’s degree in a low or middle-income Commonwealth country. Aimed at students who are committed to creating change in their communities, the scholarships are a life-changing opportunity to experience a new country and culture, to broaden horizons, and to build a global network that will last a lifetime,” reads the programme description.

Details on who can apply and the specifics of the system can be found on this FAQ page but the upcoming closing date of 24th May should be kept in mind.

In its tweet directing UJ students to the scholarship, the university provides a link to a page on its own website for more information.

That page – the Scholarship and Internship opportunities page here – makes no mention of the Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships.

Because of this it’s best to use the link to the official website for the programme and, for quick reference, the image below which UJ also shared which you can see at the bottom of this story.

While the focus of this article has been on UJ as it has provided a signal boost to the now open applications and made students aware of it, the scholarships are not at all limited to this one university. The local universities which are eligible are: University of Venda, University of Pretoria (UP), University of Johannesburg (UJ), Stellenbosch University, Rhodes University and the North-West University.
