As Elon Musk makes enemies on Twitter, SpaceX’s Starlink has announced a strange new offering that will see users paying more, for less.

Starlink RV is that offering and it seems primed for the vanlifers of the US. There are a number of aspects of this offer that set it apart from the regular Starlink service. For one, Starlink RV allows buyers to skip the waiting list and get themselves a dish right now.

Users will have to fork out a pretty penny for this priviledge though with the full upfront fee of $599 being due when you pay. The monthly internet service fee is also higher at $135 compared to $110.

What makes this even worse is that as The Verge points out, for paying extra, you get a worse internet experience.

“Network resources are always de-prioritized for Starlink for RVs users compared to other Starlink services, resulting in degraded service and slower speeds in congested areas and during peak hours. Stated speeds and uninterrupted use of the service are not guaranteed. Service degradation will be most extreme in ‘Waitlist’ areas on the Starlink Availability Map during peak hours,” reads an FAQ about the offer.

So what is the benefit of this service? Being able to pause it easily when you don’t need it and immediate access. That is really it.

We suppose this could be useful for folks who travel and don’t have one fixed address but this seems like an extreme amount of money for a worse service.

This really looks like SpaceX playing into the fear of missing out some buyers may have but we really hope that this sort of tiering isn’t how Starlink intends to structure its offering moving forward.

This hasn’t stopped folks from paying Starlink to skip the line and get a worse service for more money. Many buyers say a deprioritized Starlink connection is better than what they have but we’re curious to see whether that sentiment remains the same over the coming months.
