COVID-19 in South Africa: 20th June 2022

With the temperature continuing to drop in many parts of the country, COVID-19 in South Africa has slipped down a couple of pegs in terms of priorities for several people, as staying warm remains of key importance.

The fight to stay warm also brings with it the ever-looming threat of loadshedding, with last week seeing Eskom warn that it could be implemented at short notice.

As such, most people are on edge this week.

While we await to see what happens in terms of the power situation, the past 24 hours has seen a relatively low number of new daily infections recorded for the spread of the virus. To that end the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 995 new cases have been recorded, as the total number of infections to date has since risen to 3 986 601.

The department also notes that six fatalities have been recorded, with the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa reaching 101 6014.

Other key figures in the latest report sees the recovery rate increase slightly to 97.1 percent, while more than 25.59 million tests have been conducted to date.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 1 410 jabs administered owing to it being a Sunday. As of 17:00 on 19th June 2022, a total of 36 602 354 vaccines administered across the country.
