Diablo Immortal rakes in cash despite microtransaction backlash

Gamers have spent the last week voicing their displeasure at the cash grab that is Blizzard’s latest title – Diablo Immortal.

The game is Blizzard’s latest mobile game after Hearthstone. Set in the Diablo world and stepped in lore, the game is great but there is unanimous disdain for the microtransaction model.

Or at least, that’s what things look like if you look at the discourse online, behind the scenes there is a different story being told.

According to data from AppMagic via Engadget, Diablo Immortal is raking in the microtransactions for Blizzard. To date Diablo Immortal has earned $24 million. The game is most popular in the US which accounts for 26 percent of the more than five million downloads thus far.

The US is also the biggest spender in Diablo Immortal, accounting for 44 percent of the aforementioned $24 million figure. South Korea accounts for 22 percent of the figure followed by Japan, Germany and Canada.

We should point out that this data comes from a third party and not directly from Blizzard so we advise taking the above figures with a grain of salt.

With that having been said, those figures should be concerning. We say this because turning over $24 million in revenue in little over three weeks is mad and to us would say that this sort of monetisation strategy works.

However, in spite of this, IGN reports that Overwatch 2 will ditch loot boxes instead making use of a Battle Pass and a Store. While this could be a sign that Blizzard is turning over a new leaf, we’re more inclined to believe that this is due to government regulations which outright ban loot boxes. Diablo Immortal is infamously unavailable in Belgium or Netherlands thanks to gambling laws in those regions.

The future of Blizzard games sure is going to be interesting and we suspect Diablo Immortal will be a watershed moment in that future.
