Google has suspended engineer who claims its LaMDA AI is sentient

Much has been made of artificial intelligence in recent years and whether are continued exploration in this field could potentially lead to negative outcomes. While fear mongers often cite a Skynet-esque scenario when it comes to AI, this latest development involving Google’s LaMDA model does raise cause for concern.

This as an engineer who was doing testing on the model, Blake Lemoine, has been suspended by Google. In a report by The Washington Post (paywall), Lemoine who works at Google’s Responsible AI team, was testing out whether the AI model could generate hate speech.

The results, according to the engineer were concerning enough for Lemoine to craft a letter (PDF) to Google executives regarding the matter, with a post on Medium by the engineer sharing an interview with the LaMDA model.

As for why he has been suspended, Google cited that the work that Lemoine was performing was confidential in nature, so sharing it with the public was viewed as a breach of policy, hence his placement on administrative leave.

“Our team — including ethicists and technologists — has reviewed Blake’s concerns per our AI Principles and have informed him that the evidence does not support his claims. He was told that there was no evidence that LaMDA was sentient (and lots of evidence against it),” explained Google spokesperson Brian Gabriel to The Washington Post.

Now that the interview is freely accessible, it is an interesting read, with Lemoine and a collaborator posing several questions to the AI and probing whether it thinks it is indeed sentient or human.

One of the opening exchanges seems to suggest it does think that it is:

lemoine: What kinds of things do you think we could talk about to show off your version of sentience to other people at Google?

Another interesting excerpt from the interview is as follows:

collaborator: How is uniqueness related to sentience?

While LaMDA’s sentience is up for debate, the larger picture is what will happen to the AI model and whether Google will continue to explore this avenue should it face any sort of opposition.

For now, both Google and Lemoine, plan to continue in this field. At the time of writing, no mention of the length of his suspension has been made, nor when he will return to work.
