Gran Turismo film slated to hit theatres in August next year

Last week we reported on two PlayStation properties that are in the process of development, with Netflix working on a Horizon Zero Dawn series and SA’s own Neill Blomkamp directing a Gran Turismo film.

Now more details have emerged regarding the latter, with Deadline reporting that the Gran Turismo film is currently slated for theatrical release on 11th August 2023.

We also have some insight as to what the story of this film will be, with it chronicling the journey of a Gran Turismo player that gets the chance to be an actual racing driver.

“Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver,” a short synopsis sent to Deadline explains.

As The Verge points out, this storyline is not that fantastical, as professional players were given the opportunity to race under Nissan in the GT Academy from 2008 to 2016. Whether one of the actual competitors from the Academy will serve as the inspiration, remains to be seen, but it looks like this film will be grounded in reality.

As for the other news on the project, such as who will be cast and indeed when production will start, PlayStation has remained mum on both fronts. With the film’s release a little over a year away, hopefully production has begun in earnest.

That said, if it gets delayed, hopefully it will mean some more spit and polish, as videogame adaptations have proved a mixed bag in the past. We also hope this is a nice springboard for Blomkamp, who has been a little quiet of late outside of his Oats Studios ventures.
