Learn how to play the Pokémon TCG in Sandton this weekend

Over the past few years the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) has experienced a boom not seen since the original Pokémon explosion in the late 90s and early 2000s.

While everyone knows that the cards are fun to collect, there’s a fantastic game that can be played with them too.

This game is full of strategy, tough decisions and a touch of arithmetic, but is extremely easy to get into.

Like most great games it can be understood by even young kids but to reach the heights of competitiveness you need a strong strategic mind.

For new and returning Pokémon TCG fans who want to get into the hobby and learn how to play, there will be a special event happening this Saturday in Sandton which will teach you exactly that.

The event details can be found below:

  • Time: 10:00 – 13:00
  • Date: 4th June 2022
  • Place: Nintendo Switch Pop-Up Zone in the Sandton City shopping centre
  • Price: Free!

The TCG enjoys a complex competitive system that leads to a yearly world championship and the 2022 edition of this championship is being held in just a few month’s time in the UK.

South Africa is an officially recognised region of this endeavour and it all starts with small grassroots events like this one and regular Pokémon League sessions.

Several Leagues exist in South Africa with one of them being Pokéworx which usually takes place on Fridays and weekend days at Nexus in Randburg.

Pokéworx is helmed by two Pokémon Professors and yes, a real life Pokémon Professor is something you can apply to be through Pokémon and involves hosting events and passing official tests.

Those Professors are Jonah Alter and Matt Kayser who will also be helming the event this Saturday.

“From the great friends that I have made to the unforgettable experiences, the Pokémon Trading Card Game has made a huge impact on my life. It’s an incredibly friendly and inviting community that will keep you coming back for more,” Alter tells us.

Alter also says that there will be some great stuff on offer such as free sample packs of cards and a lucky draw for a prize.

This forms part of International Tabletop Day 2022 which is being headed by Solarpop in South Africa, the official importer and distributor of the Pokémon TCG and other card and board games in the country.

This is on top of the Pokémon cards that the Nintendo Switch Pop-Up Zone itself sells.
