South Africa is quickly becoming a mecca for LEGO stores as a fifth physical location is set to open later this year.
Robert Greenstein – co-founder of Great Yellow Brick (Pty) Ltd, license holders for the LEGO Certified Stores in the country – tells us that the new store will open in early October in the Mall of Africa.
“It will be the 5th physical store in South Africa and will bring LEGO’s new conceptual store design to SA, termed ‘Store of the Future’. It will entail a different shopping experience to our other stores with a bright and fresh new feel as well new fixtures. We will communicate more about the opening closer to the time but there will be great activities, giveaways and prizes and lots of fun over the opening weekend. Mall of Africa is one of the most up and coming premium malls in the country and we believe will be a great fit for the brand,” Greenstein writes.
This “Store of the Future” concept was first unveiled in January with stores launched in New York (USA), Barcelona (Spain) and Chengdu (China). LEGO worked with design company TracyLocke to make these stores appeal to both local residents and visiting tourists.

The first LEGO Certified Store opened in South Africa in 2018 in Sandton City and was followed up by several others including Menlyn Park in Pretoria, Canal Walk in Cape Town and Gateway in Durban.
We have visited several of these stores over the years and they are always fun, even outside of the pure shopping experience. LEGO stores offer several features that regular toy stores simply don’t have such as exclusive sets only available there, the Pick-A-brick wall which allows you to fill up a cup with pieces you want, a station to build custom minifigures and more.
While Great Yellow Brick does offer an extensive online shopping experience the Pick-A-Brick wall and minifig station are only available in person in the stores.
