Airbnb will work with Cape Town Tourism to attract remote workers

The pandemic brought about a shift in how some companies view work, some, not all.

Unfortunately for employers, outside influences such as the rising cost of transport mean that employees are increasingly looking to greener, remoter pastures and Airbnb is looking to help those folks.

Earlier this year the firm launched its Live and Work Anywhere initiative. This saw Airbnb working with governments around the world to highlight destinations that are perfect for remote work. This week the firm announced it would work with Cape Town Tourism to launch the initiative locally.

Airbnb will work together with Cape Town Tourism on a range of projects including a custom-built hub where travellers will be able to see the top long-term rentals in Cape Town. This hub will also include important information such as entry requirements and visa policies for prospective workers.

“In collaborating with these destinations, we want to make it easier for workers to enjoy this flexibility and support the return of safe and responsible travel. We know that travel brings significant economic opportunity to local communities and connects people around the world. We’re excited to launch this one-stop shop for anyone thinking of joining the millions of workers that are already enjoying this new trend of working flexibility and travel,” co-founder and chief strategy officer at Airbnb, Nathan Blecharczyck said in a statement.

The firm says that remote work for travel is rather popular among its users with one in five guests saying they used Airbnb to work remotely while travelling in 2021.

“We are incredibly proud to be profiled by Airbnb as one of the world’s best cities for remote working. Cape Town offers an unparalleled experience as an inclusive, hospitable African city in the heart of nature. The work-life balance that our city offers is truly unique,” said chief marketing officer for Cape Town Tourism, Leigh Dawber.

Cape Town is just one of 20 destinations Airbnb will spotlight in this initiative. The other destinations are:

  • Baja California Sur, Mexico
  • Bali, Indonesia
  • Brindisi, Puglia, Italy
  • Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • Caribbean
  • Canary Islands, Spain
  • Cape Town, South Africa
