Apple hires Lamborghini executive to work on its electric vehicle

Last year industry rumours suggested Apple was courting car makers to help with its electric vehicle plans under the Project Titan codename.

While it is unclear whether Apple did indeed find a partner, the company appears to be snapping up as much talent as possible to bring Project Titan to fruition. This as Bloomberg reports (paywall) that an executive from Lamborghini was been hired by Apple to help in the development of the Cupertino-based firm’s first autonomous EV.

The executive in question is Luigi Taraborrelli, who is said to have left Lamborghini in May of this year, according to information gleaned from his LinkedIn profile. Taraborrelli has 21 years of experience at Lamborghini, having worked on recent vehicles like the Urus SUV (pictured above), Huracan Coupé, Performante and Aventador Coupé.

As such, he knows a thing or two about designing and manufacturing luxury sports cars.

With Apple having hired more people with experience in the automotive industry alongside Taraborrelli in recent months, it looks like Project Titan is once again ramping up its development.

That said, the fact that Apple has designs to put its own self-driving EV on the roads is no secret, with Project Titan being rumoured or spoken about in varying capacities since 2014. As we near a decade since these rumours first started, we may be several years off from seeming anything meaningful materialise.

With many a company bracing for tough times as a result of the pandemic, while the hiring of Taraborrelli is interesting, it isn’t definitive proof that Project Titan will indeed see the light of day. Added to this is the fact that Apple is still looking for a partner to handle the core components of this electric vehicle.

Only when that happens can fans of Apple and EVs truly start to get excited.
