Eskom will host physical science fairs in North West for first time in two years

Over the last two years Eskom has hosted its regional science fairs virtually but now that lockdown restrictions have gone, it’s time to get back to in-person events.

The utility has announced four science fairs which will run in July and August in the North West province. You can find the dates and venues of these fairs in the header image above and at the bottom of this story.

The fairs will give students an opportunity to showcase their projects while also competing for a spot at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair. Students who are selected for this event will receive mentorship from experts from the North West University.

“The last two years have been quite challenging, as Eskom Expo had to execute its mandates virtually. Due to the rural nature of our province [North West] and connectivity issues experience, a large number of learners were unable to participate in the Eskom Expo during this time,” Eskom Expo’s North West provincial coordinator, Mmabatho Moloedi said in a statement.

Given the sizeable gap some students may have been forced to endure, Eskom began 2022 by reintroducing students to the event through a series of workshops. The utility also hosted research and innovation camps to help students with the process of starting a project.

The dates for the Eskom Expo in North West are:

  • 23rd July – Vryburg High School Hall
  • 29th July – Zinniaville Secondary School Hall
  • 5th August – Mmabatho High School Hall
  • 12th August – Klerksdorp Ballroom Hall

While Eskom continues to get a handle on its generation infrastructure, we’re pleased to see the firm giving back in some form, especially in the realm of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
