Fast & Furious, 007 LEGO launching in South Africa for R369

Around a month ago LEGO unveiled two new sets based on a pair of famous franchises in the form of James Bond and the Fast & Furious. At the time we didn’t have South African pricing or availability, but now we do.

Both sets will launch in August and they will cost R369 each.

As a reminder set 76912: Fast & Furious 1970 Dodge Charger R/T comes with one minifigure of Dominic Toretto and 345 pieces. Set 76911: 007 Aston Martin DB5 also has one minifigure, this time of James Bond, and 298 pieces.

The local product pages for the Dodge Charger R/T and the Aston Martin DB5 can be found by clicking on those links. When they launch return to those pages to buy them if you’re so inclined.

So how does this availability compare to other countries? Both sets launch on 1st August overseas and, while they will likely arrive in South Africa on the same day, sometimes sets are delayed later into the month locally.

With only “August” listed as the release this factor is a bit up in the air.

The price is more set in stone…. kind of. European pricing is used as the basis for South African pricing and it’s the most fair comparison as it includes tax, unlike the American one.

In the EU these sets will sell for €24.99 when they release. At the time of writing that converts to around R429.44.

At this point we should be celebrating that South Africa has such fantastic pricing, but we wouldn’t get too excited yet. This is because, in August, LEGO will raise the prices on many of their sets with some of them increasing drastically.

Both of these sets fall victim to this, according to LEGO news site StoneWars which posits that both were originally priced at €19.99 (~R343) but will see a massive 25 percent increase to the aforementioned €24.99.

Right now the August release date and R369 price is listed by Great Yellow Brick, which is the purveyor of the official LEGO stores in South Africa. Pricing on the site is usually accurate and representative of a national RRP in the country, but it’s very possible that the R369 price is based on the older, pre-increase Euro price point.

For now we will have to wait and see if the R369 sticks or if it will be closer to R429.44.

For those who are hesitant at either price check out the great video below by YouTube channel RacingBrick, which is an interview with the LEGO designer of these sets. It shows off both cars as well as providing insight into the toy engineering that goes into these products.
