Performance in F1 22 ‘brought more in line’ with real cars

The F1 22 game has been updated to Patch 1.06 which, along with many other changes, hopes to make the virtual experience closer to the real thing.

The full patch notes are available on publisher EA’s website here, but the very first item is what we’re interested in:

“F1 22 Vehicle Performance has been brought more in line with the real season. All F1 Time Trial leaderboards have been reset as a result of this change,” the notes read.

Strangely these notes don’t really paint the full picture and you need to go to the “deep-dive article” for Force Feedback and handling for more information.

We’ve condensed this section penned by David Greco, who is the Handling Group Lead on the game. Greco points to four areas, which we have in bold below, which are addressed by Patch 1.06.

“The engine torque curve has been tweaked slightly, from an almost flat torque of 6,000 – 10,000 rpm to a curve, with a lower Max nm and a progressively increasing torque. This means that the engine has less torque at lower rpm and that power will increase gradually.

Gear ratios have been tweaked slightly, especially the lower gears, making them longer to help with traction.

The force feedback has been enhanced by adding the self-aligning torque of the tyres to the overall calculation.

[For tyre temperatures] … running a very high tyre pressure will have a negative effect to grip and lap times, especially after a few laps… the grip from the tyres have not been tweaked, so there will be no difference in Time Trial, as the tyre temps are not enabled.”

Whether these changes will actually make the game more realistic remains to be seen but the overall reception of the patch has been negative so far.

On places like the Steam Community and on Reddit users point to many other issues which have not been addressed such as the career mode, straight line speed, AI problems and more.

Hopefully these are being addressed for future patches.

F1 22 is out now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam and Origin).
