SA students have until 31st July to apply to Queensland scholarship

South African students have been encouraged to apply to a scholarship programme in Australia organised by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

This encouragement comes from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) which operates the International Scholarship platform as a nexus for overseas opportunities to fund studies and cultural exchanges.

The DHET writes that the programme is accepting applicants until 31st July 2022 which leaves just a few weeks to participate. After this the selected applicants will be notified by November 2022 and studies will commence in person in Brisbane, Queensland on 1st January 2023 until 31st July 2023.

It should be noted that the 31st July 2022 deadline for applications only applies to those outside of Australia. Citizens of Australia have an extended deadline of 31st August 2022 to apply.

This programme is broken into two “centrally-funded” scholarships – the QUTPRA and RTP – which explained below.

QUT Postgraduate Research Award (QUTPRA)

  • An annual stipend paid fortnightly, indexed annually. The annual stipend rate in 2022 is $28,854 (AUD). The scholarship can be used to support living costs.
  • QUT Tuition Fee Sponsorship.

Research Training Programme (RTP) Stipend Scholarship

  • An annual stipend paid fortnightly, indexed annually. The annual stipend rate in 2022 is $28,854 (AUD). The scholarship can be used to support living costs.
  • An Australian Government Research Training Programme (RTP) Fees Offset.
  • You can also apply for: A $1,520 interstate relocation allowance | A $420 (masters by research), or $840 (PhD) thesis allowance after submitting your thesis.

As you can tell from the wording of the two scholarships the focus here is on Masters and Doctorate students, so those looking for undergrad scholarship opportunities should look elsewhere.

Students who are interested should start on the DHET International Scholarship website and carefully read all the supplied information on its dedicated page. Further information can also be found on the QUT website.
