The LEGO Camaro will drive into South Africa with an attractive price

LEGO has announced the latest car for its Icons line – previously called Creator Expert – in the form of 10304: Chevrolet Camaro Z28 and not only does it look great, but it’s priced well here in South Africa.

Localised pricing of LEGO is based on the Euro with the Rand value usually derived by doing a conversion and then adding on an extra percentage.

That thankfully isn’t the case here as the Camaro, in the EU, will sell for €169.99. At the time of publication that converts to around R2 898, but that’s not what it will cost in this country.

The LEGO Certified Stores website has listed the set at R2 599 and a release date of 1st August. It’s very unusual for a LEGO set to be priced cheaper than its Euro counterpart so we’re happy to see it.

As for what your R2 599 is buying, there is 1 458 pieces in the box. Once assembled the Camaro measures in at 36 X 14 X 10 centimetres (length X width X height).

The real party trick here is the customisation. Builders can choose the colour of stripes (white, grey or red), the type of roof (hardtop or convertible) and what lights they want (classic or “hideaway”).

Like many other cars in the Icons / Creator Expert line this one also has a selection of licence plates.

We really like this added choice when it comes to making the model more personalised, which LEGO has been experimenting with this in a few of the larger scale cars. The last set before this one, the 10295: Porsche 911, could be built into two completely different forms with the Turbo and Targa variants both included in the box.

Another classic American muscle car, the 10265: Ford Mustang, also had two versions with an unadulterated stock model or a souped-up option with a blower that sticks out of the hood, side exhaust pipes and a huge rear wing.

Back to the Camaro and the design work here is top notch for all choices of build. The black colour really works for this classic car and there’s a ton of great details like the pair of dice hanging from the rear view mirror.

You can see more of the Camaro in this promotional video released by LEGO which is supposed to be an era-appropriate car salesman trying to convince watchers to buy the car.
