Twitter granted trial to compel Musk to pay up

On Tuesday afternoon, a Delaware court heard arguments regarding whether Twitter should be granted a trial following Elon Musk’s backtrack on a deal to acquire the social media firm.

Arguments were heard by Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick and Twitter was eventually granted a court date in October after the hearing was completed. While this is not the September date that Twitter was hoping for, it’s far sooner than the February 2023 date Musk’s team wanted.

While the issue of bots has seemingly been the cause of Musk’s hesitancy to go through with the deal, Twitter’s lawyers argue this is little more than distraction. However, as Ars Technica reports, Musk’s lawyers retaliated by claiming that Twitter had not given them all the data on spam accounts they had requested.

Despite this, both legal teams agreed that Musk had run millions of queries on Twitter’s firehose of data it gave him permission to.

It does seem as if Musk wants to draw this out as his team claims it will take months to properly parse Twitter’s data. This is a problem for Twitter as it’s currently in a state of limbo given this deal. More than than that, McCormick stated that the longer this continues, the more harm it causes for Twitter.

The trial will span five days and McCormick is confident that attorneys on both sides will be able to adequately prepare for the trial.

We’re curious to see how this unfolds but it doesn’t look good for Musk if we’re being completely honest.
