Twitter is testing a Status feature that gives “context” to tweets

The useless feature Twitter is working on today instead of a solution to editing tweets – a status indicator.

According to a report by TechCrunch, Twitter is testing the ability to set a status such as “Hot take” or “Vacation mode” among other pre-determined statuses. Users cannot set a custom status and it all just feels like a feature plucked from the annals of internet history.

Seriously, the Status and Mood feature was a cornerstone of Myspace and its purpose was to inform your friends and followers about what you were up to. At the time, this was a convenient feature but these days most social media is built on the idea of sharing your current activity with friends and followers.

Why Twitter is seemingly going backwards with canned Status updates is beyond us.

The good news is that this feature is still in the testing phase.

“For a limited time, we are testing a feature that allows you to add a status topic from a predetermined list to your Tweets to provide more context for your followers,” the social media platform told TechCrunch.

The test is limited to a select group of users in the US and Australia. With that having been said, while exploring the feature TechCrunch stumbled on NSFW content filed under the “Case of the Mondays” Status. That didn’t take long.

Of course, this feature could never progress beyond testing. We are of the opinion that it shouldn’t as tweets are becoming more and more busy. Aside from liking and retweeting Tweets, users can now also downvote responses that don’t add anything to the conversation.

Add advertising woven between replies to a tweet and the whole situation is starting to get messy.

At the very least, Twitter isn’t trying to be TikTok, at least not for now.
