Twitter is upping the price of its Blue subscription service

If you are a Twitter Blue subscriber, you likely received a notice earlier this week that the price of your monthly subscription is going up. The price increases vary depending on what region you are in, with the subscriptions rising by two to three in the country’s respective currency.

While Twitter did not detail every single territory that Twitter Blue is available in, it did highlight increases for a few key countries. To that end, the price changes moving forward are as follows:

Country Price before increase Price after increase
Australia 4.49 AUD 6.99 AUD
Canada 3.49 CAD 6.49 CAD
New Zealand 4.49 NZD 6.99 NZD
United States 2.99 USD 4.99 USD

The social media platform has also advised how billing will work for those who purchased a subscription before these new price increases, which have seemingly taken effect as of 27th or 28th July, according to the company.

“As an early adopter of Twitter Blue, you’ll continue to be charged your introductory pricing of $2.99/month until you receive additional notice from Twitter and/or the payment providers at least 30 days before the new price goes into effect. You will have an opportunity to cancel before the new price goes into effect,” explains a recently updated help page.

“Twitter Blue has increased the cost of its membership for new subscribers. Anyone who subscribes today will be charged $4.99/month, which will be localized to the regional currency,” it adds.

How current subscribers will react to the price increase remains to be seen. As for why it is happening, the reason is simple – Twitter needs money to build more Blue exclusive features. The company also highlights journalism as a reason, but we are on the fence as to that justification.

In email notifications sent out to subscribers, Twitter noted that the changes, “helps us continue to build some of the features you’ve been asking for, improve upon the current ones you already love and sustain our mission of supporting journalism.”

“We have lots of exciting things coming up, including creating a more frictionless reading experience and launching new features in Twitter Blue Labs,” it continued.

Hopefully those new features prove more useful than having an NFT as your profile picture.
