Unisa puts out call for Inter-Bursary Support Programme

Postgraduates should take heed of a call put out by the University of South Africa (Unisa) around its Inter-Bursary Support Programme which has opened its intake for 2023.

Interested parties have until 4th August to apply with rather large sums of money available per annum of studies. R100 000 is awarded for Honours, R120 000 for Master’s and R140 000 for a PhD.

“The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) has recently launched its inter-programme postgraduate bursary support scheme, aimed at supporting capacity development in strategic and priority areas identified in key departmental strategies. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is supporting the DSI in the development of skills in these areas. The IBS postgraduate bursary support is intended for full-time studies for honours / 4th year Engineering / postgraduate diploma, master’s or PhD degrees at any South African public university,” reads the description of the programme.

As you can tell from the focus on STEM subjects in the description above this programme is limited to certain focus areas for study and research, those being:

  • “Aerospace
  • Composites
  • Modelling and Digital Sciences
  • Microsystems Technology
  • Titanium (Manufacturing Elements)
  • Photonics
  • Biotechnology (Biopharming, Bioprocessing or Biocatalysis)
  • Information and Communications Technology
  • IKS (Indigenous Knowledge Systems)
  • Health.”

Applicants should also note that preference is given to those who have followed study areas or research in the above fields.

They should also keep in mind that, if they do not hear back within two months of the 4th August closing date, the application is unsuccessful.

Said application process can be found on the Unisa website here.
