Zoom is expanding end-to-end encryption to more of its services

Zoom is looking to enhance security and privacy on its videoconferencing platform following the announcement that end-to-end encryption (E2EE) is rolling out to more of its services.

Two services to be precise, with a blog post confirming that E2EE is now available on Zoom Phone, and thereafter be heading to Breakout Rooms.

“Sending and sharing data is a sensitive matter, one that requires tailored innovation for adequate protection. That’s why we’ve released key features — such as data routing control, in-product privacy notifications, end-to-end encryption (E2EE), and more — to give you more insight and control over your information,” the platform notes.

“And now, we’re excited to expand our end-to-end encryption feature to both Zoom Phone and Breakout Rooms (coming soon) — two more ways you can use Zoom to achieve seamless and secure communication,” it adds.

Starting with Zoom Phone, which is its cloud-based service, when on a call the new E2EE functionality will assign cryptographic keys that only the caller and receiver will be able to access. Added to this will be the ability to send security codes to one another in order to verify status.

There are, however, a few elements required before you can enable E2EE on Zoom Phone, such as:

  • “The account admin will have to turn on E2EE via the web portal
  • Callers will need to be on the same Zoom account, and can only make one-to-one phone calls
  • Both callers have to use the Zoom Phone desktop or mobile client (PSTN is not supported)
  • Both the callers will need to have automatic call recording turned off.”

Moving on to Breakout Rooms, which are designed to be more focused group calls, and E2EE is said to work in much the same way as it currently does on standard calls.

“It will be the same experience as a standard E2EE meeting, except each breakout room gets its own unique meeting encryption key. You can use this feature when you need to add an extra layer of security to important, private conversations, or just want to get certain people together during an E2EE meeting,” explains Zoom.

As for when this functionality will reach Breakout Rooms, no date or timeframe has been touted, as it is simply said to be available soon.
