You may remember that, back in June, Besthesda started selling a version of the Crucible from DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal. Unfortunately that was just a letter opener and the company is back with a more faithful adaptation, but it’s still not great.

We say this because it’s just the hilt of the artefact. The glowing and transparent sword part of the Crucible is entirely missing for some reason.

We would have thought this would be an easy inclusion as just a piece of plexiglass or something similar. Plexiglass would have also been an idea choice as lighting could have been built into the hilt to shine through the plastic, but there’s none of that here.

The next problem is the size. No actual scale is stated for the replica but it is 30.48 X 9.4 X 3.17 centimetres (Length X width X height).

While that may sound like a decent size, just look at this official product shot of it being held by a person…

Yeah this thing is absolutely tiny. You’d hope that, between the small size and lack of a blade, Besthesda would have priced this one rather low.

Are you sitting down? For the tiny baby Crucible hilt replica you are expected to pay $135.

On top of that insult this isn’t even a proper purchase, but a pre-order with stock expected to go out in October.

Other details include the material, which is listed as Polyresin, and the statement that these are hand painted and limited to 900 units.

Something we also haven’t mentioned until now is a base which is fine. For prop weapons like this we usually prefer a base that gives the item some elevation. For something this small a stand that could have held the Crucible aloft could have given it some extra size and prescience in a room, which it sorely needs.

Funnily enough the letter opener version did have a stand that did this, making the flat base decision even stranger.
