Despite WB putting several DC projects on hold, Joker sequel now has release date

This week has proved a tough one for fans of any upcoming Warner Bros. produced projects with an affiliation to the DC cinematic universe, as several high profile projects have either been cancelled or put on ice.

Some of the casualties to date include the HBO Max Batgirl film, along with the off-screen antics of Ezra Miller putting The Flash movie and a Supergirl spin-off film in jeopardy, according to reports.

As such, when compared to the ever-growing MCU, DC’s version is looking a little bare, with Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and the Aquaman sequel being the only real projects to look forward to.

For 2024, however, one of the biggest films will no doubt be the Joker follow-up starring Joaquin Phoenix, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the divisive 2019 film.

According to Deadline, the film is slated for release on 24th October 2024, with writer and co-director Todd Phillips revealing a title back in June – Joker: Folie à Deux. Given that it is the highest grossing R-rated film ever with $1.07 billion from box office sales, Warner Bros. will be hoping that the sequel is another success.

That said the fact that the 2019 film, which proved a lightning rod of sorts for people with toxic agendas, going ahead with production when other films are not, may rub some DC fans the wrong way.

Whatever side of the argument you fall on regarding the Joker sequel, it is becoming more evident that the DC cinematic universe is in disarray.

More interesting for us is whether the film will prove a critical success like its predecessor did, having garnered 11 Oscar nominations (two wins) and said to be bringing Lady Gaga onboard to possibly Harley Quinn to Phoenix’s Joker.
