Instagram expanding NFT sharing to 100 countries

Instagram has come under fire for its push towards a TikTok-esque design in recent weeks and while it has decided to walk back that aesthetic change, the social media platform is going all in on NFT sharing.

Instagram began testing out support for NFT creation and sharing in May of this year, and has now decided to expand the offering while also adding some features to the mix too.

“Today we’re starting (an) international expansion to 100 countries in Africa, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and the Americas. In order to post a digital collectible, all you need to do is connect your digital wallet to Instagram,” it noted in a blog post.

In terms of the African countries that are a part of the 100, Meta (which owns Instagram) confirmed the following as having access:

  • South Africa
  • Nigeria
  • Ghana
  • Kenya
  • Angola
  • Algeria
  • Botswana
  • Côte d’Ivoire
  • Gabon
  • Mauritius
  • Mozambique
  • Namibia.

For those unfamiliar with the aforementioned test, once rolled out to your region, you will able to not only create an NFT, but also connect it to a digital wallet and automatically tag its creator or collector for attribution. Added to this is the ability to share via your main Feed, Stories or in messages on the platform.

“As of today, we support connections with third-party wallets including Rainbow, MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet and Dapper Wallet. Supported blockchains at this time include Ethereum, Polygon and Flow. There are no fees associated with posting or sharing a digital collectible on Instagram,” the platform added.

With Meta also looking at more ways to leverage media like NFTs and other metaverse-related offerings, this latest announcement is part of the company’s larger plans.

“Across Meta, we’re exploring a wide range of web3 technologies because we believe they will expand access, reduce costs, and accelerate innovation, empowering people and creators around the world,” the blog post concluded.
