LEGO’s Spider-Man buildable action figures arriving for R499

Fans of Spider-Man, Miles Morales and Venom may want to pay attention to some new products from LEGO coming to South Africa soon in the form of buildable action figures.

These have been priced and poised for release overseas but now we have the official pricing and launch for the country thanks to the Certified LEGO Stores website.

It has priced all three sets at R499 each releasing in September. You can click the set number below to see more of each figure and we’ve made a quick comparison below of the piece counts and size compared to the price.

While Spider-Man stands the tallest Venom is wider and has the most pieces of the trio. As action figures are usually measured in inches, these are nine inches tall which is a common size for this kind of toy.

  • 76226 | Spider-Man Figure | 258 pieces| 24 centimetres | R499
  • 76225 | Miles Morales Figure | 238 pieces | 23 centimetres | R499
  • 76230 | Venom Figure | 279 pieces | 23 centimetres | R499

The concept of a buildable action figure has been popular with LEGO for the longest time with Bionicle being the most successful attempt . This was followed by less-successful ideas such as Hero Factory, Star Wars variants, a failed reboot of Bionicle and more.

Now the company is taking another crack at things with Marvel as the basis even though it also tried this exact same idea with versions of Iron Man, Hulk and Captain America back in 2012.

All the past attempts at buildable action figures have been with a variant of what LEGO calls the Character and Creature Building System (CCBS) which focuses on ball joints, skeletal pieces and armour to go over that skeleton.

These new Marvel incarnations use more regular LEGO bricks and plates combined with smaller joint pieces.

Much like the MCU this idea started with Iron Man who was released at the start of this year and is still on sale today. That version has 381 pieces and a higher price of R649. The Iron Man also sets itself apart by having a light up function which Spider-Man, Miles Morales and Venom all lack.

Reception to Iron Man and the new Spidey friends hasn’t been too positive so far, so we’ll have to wait and see if this latest LEGO take on action figures has any legs.
