LG’s latest Tone Free earbuds add improvements across the board

When LG unveiled its Tone Free wireless earphones a couple of years ago, one of the big gimmicks was the addition of a UV filter built into the case to keep the buds clean and germ free.

While that feature is still a cornerstone of the Tone Free lineup, the South Korean manufacturer has been refining the performance on these wireless earbuds and announced some of its most wide-ranging improvements on two new models.

The new buds are called the Tone Free T90 and Tone Free Fit, the latter of which is a new offering altogether and designed specifically for those who want a pair of wireless earphones to work out with.

What distinguishes these new Fit buds visually from past devices is the removal of the stalks on the earpieces, as well as the inclusion of hypoallergenic ear gels (wings) for a comfortable and a more compact design.

Added to this is IP67-rated waterproofness, so they should handle sweat but not a dip in the pool or shower. Also on offer is up to 10 hours of battery life from a single charge, with the charging case upping this figure to 30 hours, along with featuring the aforementioned UV-based cleaning function.

As for the T90’s, they add a few interesting elements to the mix, such as a new internal structure which affords space for larger drivers. The upshot of this is better bass, according to LG.

On the software side of things, the South Korean outfit has introduced Dolby Head Tracking to the T90’s, which is said to support all content and all platforms, along with 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio being delivered via Snapdragon Sound. LG also says active noise cancellation (ANC) has been improved with a Double Step ANC algorithm and Real Time ANC optimiser.

Like the Tone Free Fit, the T90’s make use of hypoallergenic ear gels and one of the more interesting features is the charging case doubling as a Bluetooth receiver, so you can plug it into media players and devices that may not support Bluetooth.

Unfortunately at the time of writing, LG has not detailed recommended pricing for either the Tone Free T90’s or Tone Free Fit, but is expected to reveal more details in September, so we could see additional information arrive at IFA 2022 in Berlin.
