Logitech and Tencent are building a cloud gaming device, whatever that is

We understand that marketing is a big part of a product launch but today we’re scratching our heads at the latest news from Logitech.

The peripheral maker has announced this week that it will be working with Tencent Games to create a “cloud gaming handheld”. This new device is said to support multiple cloud gaming services and both parties are working with Xbox Cloud Gaming and NVIDIA GeForce Now.

The device doesn’t currently have an official name, but according to Engadget it’s tentatively named the Logitech G Gaming Handheld. Hopefully nobody broke a sweat coming up with that name.

This is all a bit odd though. For one, the idea of cloud gaming was that gamers could start playing a game from anywhere using a smartphone. Now it appears as if Logitech and Tencent Games have decided that what we all really need is a console to carry with us when we can’t get to our consoles or PC.

While the pair of firms haven’t said much about the handheld, it’s clearly not a Steamdeck or Switch. In a blog post announcing the handheld Logitech made special mention of the benefits of cloud gaming.

“Cloud gaming utilizes data center servers to stream video games to consumers. There’s no need to download or install PC or console games. Instead, games are rendered and played on remote servers, and users interact with them locally on their devices,” the peripheral maker wrote.

This tells us not to expect a device with a lot of storage or much oomph in the compute power department.

Frankly, when we first read this news we thought that Logitech was working to make a smartphone, but this device occupies a newly created grey area between a smartphone and a console only with none of the benefits of either. It’s all just weird, especially when literal gaming smartphones exist.
