We will see a new Meta VR headset in October

After deciding to increase the price of its two-year old Oculus Quest 2 VR headset and changing user logins to a new Meta option, the company will soon be readying to release its latest piece of hardware.

This according to Mark Zuckerberg, who confirmed that a new VR headset is currently scheduled for an unveiling in October on a recent episode of the divisive Joe Rogan podcast.

“For the next device that’s coming out in October, there’s a few big features,” noted Zuckerberg when the topic of VR came up during the episode.

“The ability to now have kind of eye contact in virtual reality. Have your face be tracked so that way your avatar — it’s not just this still thing, but if you smile or if you frown or if you pout, or whatever your expression is, have that translate in real time to your avatar,” he enthused when rattling off features and functionality.

No name was revealed, but this new device is likely the Project Cambria headset that Meta has been working on, as The Verge points out. It is also believed that this Pro model headset will appear alongside a more “affordable” option, with both anticipated at Meta’s annual Connect event.

Speaking of price, the upcoming headset is also said to be far more expensive than the current Quest 2 model, which saw its price rise to $399. The features that Zuckerberg alludes to in the podcast will need to be killer then, if it is going to tempt current VR headset owners to upgrade.
