Eskom recovers R30 million that was paid to boost former CEOs pension fund

Despite Stage 2 loadshedding currently in effect for the rest of the week, there is (for a change) some good news coming out of Eskom today.

The power utility has announced that it has recovered R30 million that it unlawfully paid to the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund. This payment was made with a view to increasing former Eskom chief executive officer, Brian Molefe’s pension fund.

The news comes months after the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria ruled that Molefe needs to back the money he received from the pension fund. This amounts to R9 985 540 plus interest which is calculated from 31st October 2019 up to the date a payment is made, News24 reported in July.

This same ruling lead to the recovery of R30 million.

“Eskom is pleased to confirm that it has successfully recovered the R30 million it unlawfully paid to the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund for the benefit former Chief Executive Officer Brian Molefe during 2016,” the utility wrote in a statement on Wednesday.

“In July 2022, the North Gauteng High Court re-affirmed a 2018 high court judgement that had reviewed and set aside a 2016 early retirement agreement between Mr Molefe and Eskom,” Eskom added.

Despite this matter having dragged on for literal years with Molefe appealing and having that appeal denied, it’s good news that Eskom has finally seen that money again.
