TikTok says it has not been hacked despite source code being leaked

TikTok is doing a bit of damage control this week, denying recent claims that it was hacked. This after a hacking group called AgainstTheWest said it had breached the social media platform after creating a forum post last week Friday.

The group also claimed to have hacked WeChat, sharing screenshots of a database that it is believed to belong to each of the companies. The breach was achieved via an Alibaba cloud instance, the hackers elaborated.

While WeChat is yet to officially comment on the matter, TikTok is trying to set the record straight, providing feedback to Bleeping Computer, which originally reported the alleged breach.

“This is an incorrect claim — our security team investigated this statement and determined that the code in question is completely unrelated to TikTok’s backend source code, which has never been merged with WeChat data,” the company explained in an official statement.

TikTok also told Bleeping Computer that the method of accessing source code is not possible, with leaking of user data not allowing for the scraping of its platform.

There are some other oddities too, with the respective platforms not owned by the same company. This as ByteDance owns TikTok and WeChat is owned by Tencent, so both sets of data being accessed from the same cloud instance, does not seem to add up in TikTok’s view.

Creator of HaveIBeenPwned, Troy Hunt, also weighed in on the breach, noting that there is indeed valid data, but that he could not find anything that was not already publicly available via TikTok already.
